Review: 2021 Lexus LS 500h AWD

Newly tweaked refinements elevate the levels of quietness and comfort for the brand's iconic luxury sedan.

After debuting the first-generation Lexus LS in 1989 and the all-new LS that launched in 2018, the luxury automaker continues to build on its previous success by adding even more equipment tweaks, comfort refinement, and advanced technology to the brand's popular high-end sedan. Key refinements and underpinning modifications to the brand's most capable sedan flagship to date, as defined by the Lexus GA-L platform, include tuning of the suspension and chassis to enhance ride quality and comfort.

The LS, as a flagship, has constantly pursued innovation and has provided new technologies and value for its customers. In developing the new LS, we furthered the evolution of the exceptional quietness and comfort that has been a steadfast constant since the model's first generation.
Koji Sato, Lexus International Presiden

Craftsmanship

Traditional Lexus principals of meticulous Takumi craftsmanship along with anticipatory Omotenashi hospitality that preemptively caters to expected needs are incorporated into the LS. Additionally, a new philosophical change known as the Lexus Driving Signature sets a definitive forward-thinking standard for future vehicle development and refinement. In order to represent Lexus DNA by elevating comfort, quietness, and overall tranquility, the Lexus Driving Signature works to apply detailed tuning, component updates, and control surface upgrades with the intended result of achieving a higher standard of vehicle control, balance, and driver confidence.

Hybrid

A powertrain improvement to the 2021 LS 500h (hybrid) makes use of a Multistage Hybrid System that combines a naturally aspirated Atkinson-cycle 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine with two electric motor/generators powered by a compact and lightweight lithium-ion battery. This new battery strategy enables the vehicle's ability to drive more power through the electric motors upon acceleration. This internal combustion engine paired with the electric traction system achieves a combined system output of 354 horsepower, thus enabling the LS 500h to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds (RWD).

Interior

A variety of slight improvements to components within the sedan's cabin elevate passenger comfort in subtle yet substantial ways. The front seats have been given revised seat springs and thicker cushioning material, while controls on the steering wheel and center console have been uniformly colored black for improved visibility. Additional foam material has also been added to areas such as armrests, seat cushions, center console armrest padding, and other touch points. A new Palomino Leather interior is now available as well as new interior ornamentation options. The striking cut-glass ornamentation, a world's first in a production vehicle, and available hand-folded pleats on the door trim is available on Executive models as a stunning example of the brand's innovative elegance through Japanese craftsmanship.

[LS is] a model that gives rise to transformation through the spirit of constant innovation and by providing new technologies and value for the times.
Akio Toyoda, Chief Branding Officer and Master Driver

Safety

Advanced safety and driver support are a priority on this current year model, thus all grades of the 2021 LS feature Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 as standard equipment. The Pre-Collision System (PCS) is designed to detect a closeby preceding vehicle, Lane Departure Alert (LDA) is designed to alert the driver when it senses that the vehicle is deviating from its lane, and the standard Lane Departure Alert with Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) system is designed to detect visible lane markings to determine lane position. The optionally available Lexus Safety System+ A offers additional equipment, as both systems help support more secure driving in a wide range of on-road situations.
